Brakes parts — frequently asked questions

Are used brake parts safe to buy?

Used calipers, ABS modules and master cylinders from low-kilometre donor vehicles are safe when sourced from a reputable wrecker. Used rotors and pads are not usually worth buying — they're consumables, and the cost saving over new aftermarket isn't enough to justify variable wear. For calipers and ABS modules, used OEM is the value sweet spot.

How much do used brake calipers cost?

Used front calipers for common Australian cars typically run $80–$250 each, depending on whether the donor was a base or performance model. Performance calipers (Brembo, AP, etc) on European and Japanese performance cars can be $400–$1,500 each. Always quote per side.

Should I rebuild or replace a stuck caliper?

If only one caliper is stuck, fitting a used replacement from a wrecker is usually faster and cheaper than a rebuild kit — and the wrecker's caliper has a warranty. For matched-set replacements (e.g. all four corners), a refurb may make sense if you can't source a complete used set.

Are used ABS modules programmed to my car?

ABS module programming requirements vary by manufacturer. Many earlier modules are plug-and-play if the part number matches exactly. Modern modules often need coding to your VIN through a dealer-level scan tool. Confirm with the wrecker whether the module needs coding before you commit.
