Transmission parts — frequently asked questions

Are used gearboxes reliable?

Yes, when bought from a reputable wrecker with a written warranty. Used gearboxes — manual or automatic — are factory units pulled from donor vehicles, and most failures show up early in the warranty window. Ask for the donor vehicle's recorded kilometres and a 30-day minimum mechanical warranty.

How much is a used gearbox in Australia?

Manual gearboxes for common cars typically run $400–$1,500. Automatic transmissions for petrol cars are usually $800–$2,500. Heavy-duty automatics for diesel utes and 4WDs (Hilux, Ranger, Patrol, LandCruiser) are typically $1,500–$4,500. Performance and dual-clutch gearboxes are higher again.

Should I replace or rebuild my transmission?

On older or higher-kilometre cars, fitting a used gearbox from a low-kilometre donor is usually faster and cheaper than a full rebuild — and comes with a parts warranty. Rebuilds make more sense for unusual or hard-to-source units, or when you're keeping the car long-term and want a fresh internal.

Do automatic and manual gearboxes from the same model swap?

No — the bellhousing, clutch/torque converter, ECU pinout and often the driveshaft and crossmember are different. Always quote the gearbox to your exact transmission type, and supply your VIN so the wrecker can confirm the right variant before despatch.

What warranty comes with a used transmission?

Most Australian wreckers offer 30 days minimum on used transmissions, with premium stock often carrying 3 months. Warranty covers internal mechanical failure of the gearbox itself but not labour, fluids or peripheral components. Get the warranty terms in writing before paying.
