Safety parts — frequently asked questions

Are used airbags safe to fit?

Yes — provided the airbag is undeployed, within the manufacturer's stated service life (typically 10–15 years from manufacture), and supplied with donor history. Reputable Australian wreckers only sell undeployed airbags from documented donor vehicles. Never buy an airbag without confirmation it's undeployed.

Can I buy used seatbelts and pretensioners?

Yes — undeployed seatbelt assemblies and pretensioners are widely available from wreckers. As with airbags, they must come from a donor where the pretensioner did not fire. Used seatbelts with deployed pretensioners must not be re-used and are scrapped.

How are used safety parts shipped in Australia?

Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners contain pyrotechnic charges and are classified as dangerous goods for freight. They require dangerous-goods declarations and approved packaging, and must ship with a dangerous-goods-licensed carrier. The wrecker handles this — confirm dangerous-goods freight is included in your quote.

Will a used airbag work with my car's electronics?

Most airbags are plug-and-play if the part number matches exactly. Some modern cars require the SRS module to be reset or coded after a deployed-airbag replacement. Always confirm with the wrecker which path applies to your vehicle.
