Suspension parts — frequently asked questions

Are used suspension parts safe to fit?

Used struts, shocks and control arms from low-kilometre donor vehicles are generally safe and a fraction of the new price, but condition matters. Avoid struts and shocks from very high-kilometre donors (over 200,000 km) — at that point seals and damping have usually deteriorated. Bushes, springs and control arms wear far less and are reliable used buys.

Should I replace shocks in pairs?

Yes — always replace shocks in axle pairs (both fronts or both rears together). Mismatched damping side-to-side affects handling and tyre wear, and a fresh shock paired with a tired shock will simply make the tired one feel worse. Ordering a matched used pair from the same donor is the easiest way to keep them even.

Can I get used suspension parts for a lifted 4WD?

Aftermarket lift kits use specific shocks and springs, so used factory suspension is only useful if you're returning to standard ride height. For 4WD owners going back to stock, used factory struts and shocks are widely available for popular Hilux, Ranger, Navara, LandCruiser, Patrol and Pajero variants.

Do suspension parts need a wheel alignment after fitting?

Yes — any time you replace control arms, tie rods, struts or springs, get a wheel alignment immediately afterwards. Without it, you'll wear out a set of tyres in months. Budget around $80–$150 for a four-wheel alignment at a workshop.
