Cooling parts — frequently asked questions
Are used radiators reliable?
Used radiators from low-kilometre donor vehicles are reliable, but check carefully for fin damage, internal corrosion and leaking endcaps. Plastic-tank aluminium radiators (most modern cars) have a finite life — for a donor over 12 years old, a new aftermarket radiator is often better value than used.
How much does a used radiator or condenser cost?
Used radiators for common Australian cars typically run $80–$280. A/C condensers are usually $80–$220. Heavy-duty radiators for diesel 4WDs (Hilux, Ranger, LandCruiser) sit at the upper end and are sometimes only marginally cheaper than new aftermarket — compare both.
Are used water pumps and thermostats worth buying?
Generally no — water pumps and thermostats are wear items and a new aftermarket unit is cheap and comes with a warranty. Save the used parts approach for the housings, hoses, fan assemblies and intercoolers where the cost gap is meaningful.
Can a wrecker pressure-test a used radiator before despatch?
Many can, particularly for higher-value diesel and performance radiators. Ask for a pressure test and photos of the result before you commit. For lower-value units it's usually not offered, so factor in the warranty terms instead.
