Lighting parts — frequently asked questions

Are used headlights worth buying?

Yes — used headlights from low-kilometre donor cars are typically a fraction of new dealer prices and can be near-mint. Check for clouded lenses, internal moisture and chipped tabs before buying. For LED and adaptive headlights, confirm the variant matches your car's electronics.

How much is a used headlight or tail light?

Used halogen headlights for common cars typically run $80–$300. LED and adaptive units run $300–$1,200 or more. Tail lights are usually $60–$250. Premium European LED lights with washers and curve-matrix lenses are at the upper end.

Will a used headlight need coding?

Halogen and basic LED headlights are usually plug-and-play. Adaptive matrix LED headlights on European cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW) sometimes need coding to enable specific functions. Confirm the coding path with the wrecker before you pay if your car has adaptive lighting.

Can I clean up a foggy used headlight?

Yes — fine sandpaper and a polish kit can restore mildly clouded lenses. Heavy clouding is best left to a polishing specialist or replaced. When buying used, prefer headlights from late-model donors that haven't yet started to oxidise.
