Drivetrain parts — frequently asked questions
Are used diffs reliable?
Used differentials from low-kilometre donor vehicles are reliable, but always quote the axle ratio (e.g. 3.73, 4.10) when ordering — wrong-ratio diffs cause speedo errors and ABS faults. For 4WDs and utes, check the locker/LSD type matches your vehicle's spec.
How much is a used diff or driveshaft?
Used rear diffs for common cars typically run $300–$900. Heavy-duty 4WD diffs (Hilux, Ranger, LandCruiser, Patrol) are usually $600–$1,800. Driveshafts run $200–$600 depending on length and donor model.
Will any same-model diff fit my car?
Not always. Final drive ratios, locker options and axle widths often differ across trim levels in the same model line. Always supply your VIN or vehicle build details so the wrecker can match the exact diff variant — fitting the wrong ratio causes immediate ABS and speedo issues.
Are used CV joints worth buying?
For one-off failures, yes — a used CV from a low-kilometre donor is cheap and quick. For high-kilometre cars where multiple CVs are tired, a new aftermarket axle assembly is often better value because it comes with new boots, grease and a warranty.
