Steering parts — frequently asked questions
Are used steering racks reliable?
Used hydraulic and electric steering racks from low-kilometre donor vehicles are reliable, but check for leak history and confirm the rack turns lock-to-lock smoothly. Electric racks may need coding to your VIN — confirm the coding path with the wrecker before you fit.
How much is a used steering rack?
Used hydraulic steering racks for common Australian cars typically run $200–$600. Electric power steering racks are usually $300–$900. Diesel ute and 4WD racks (Hilux, Ranger, LandCruiser) sit at the upper end.
Can I buy a used steering wheel only?
Yes — steering wheels are commonly sold separately and can be a cheap way to refresh a worn interior or change to a leather-wrapped wheel from a higher trim. If the wheel has a driver airbag mounted, the airbag must be undeployed and within service life.
Do used steering racks come with new tie rods?
Usually not — tie rods are sold separately because they wear independently. Budget for a fresh set of tie rod ends with any rack replacement, and get a wheel alignment immediately after fitment.
