Electrical parts — frequently asked questions

Are used ECUs programmed to my car?

ECUs from earlier vehicles are often plug-and-play if the part number matches exactly. Modern ECUs almost always need to be programmed to your VIN — either by the wrecker before despatch (the easiest path) or by a locksmith or dealer after fitment. Always confirm the programming approach before you pay.

Will a used BCM or instrument cluster work in my car?

BCMs (body control modules) and instrument clusters often need to be coded to your VIN to integrate with the immobiliser and odometer. Reputable wreckers offer pre-coding for an extra fee, or supply contact details for a coder in your state. Don't fit one without confirming the coding path first.

Are aftermarket ECUs a good substitute?

Aftermarket reproductions of OEM electronics are almost always a false economy. They commonly fail within months and frequently trigger immobiliser issues that take days to diagnose. For ECUs, BCMs, modules and clusters, used OEM programmed to your VIN is the right answer.

Do used wiring looms include the connectors I need?

Yes — wreckers cut looms with the original connectors intact. When ordering, specify which connectors you need (engine bay, dash, body) and confirm with photos. Whole-vehicle looms are also available for major rebuilds and project cars.
